Kaufleute, Bankiers, Bürger, Adelige - der Weg der Augsburger Familie Fugger in die deutsche und europäische Geschichte wird in erster Linie als ökonomisches Phänomen erinnert. |
Daß die geknüpften Netzwerke allerdings nicht nur zur Mehrung des Reichtums, sondern auch zum Import künstlerischer Entwicklungen genutzt wurden, war bisher nur wenig bekannt. Die Kenntnis neuer künstlerischer Strömungen und aktueller Repräsentationsstandards, der Zugang zur Infrastruktur des Kunstmarktes sowie die fein dosierte Weitergabe dieses Wissens an ausgewählte Handelspartner und politische Handlungsträger waren kein Selbstzweck. Über Generationen hinweg diente die Kunstpatronage der Festigung der Fugger im gesellschaftlichen Gefüge ihrer Zeit, denn schließlich mußten sich die Nachkommen einer Weberfamilie aus der schwäbischen Provinz als würdige Reichsadelige beweisen. Ob als Bauherren, Stifter, Kunstagenten, Sammler oder auch als Kunstfinanciers - die Fugger übernahmen auf dem Sektor der Kunst eine ungewöhnliche Rollenvielfalt. So wurden einzelne Familienmitglieder zu Kunstförderern, die das Erscheinungsbild der süddeutschen Kunst des 16. Jahrhunderts entscheidend prägten.
Die vielseitigen Aspekte der Fuggerschen Kunstpatronage werden in dieser materialreichen Studie exemplarisch für die Zeit zwischen 1560-1618 dargelegt.

The story of the Fuggers is absolutely amazing: Jakob Fugger was the outstanding business genius of the Renaissance. He financed the imperial thrones of Maximilian I and Charles V, minted coins for the Popes and created a major European banking, trading, mining and precious metal corporation. His nephew and successor Anton acquired even more wealth. Anton Fugger provided credit to the House of Habsburg, to kings and to the Medici. Never again was one company to have such enormous political and economic influence. Still today, one can hear about the Age of the Fuggers.
